Founded in 1962 by Edward Albee - after proceeds from his play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? proved abundant—the Edward F. Albee Foundation has maintained the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (aka "The Barn") in Montauk, Long Island, for nearly 60 years. Location & Environment

Located about two miles from downtown Montauk and the Atlantic Ocean, “The Barn” sits on a secluded knoll offering privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. Residents are expected to work seriously and to support a respectful, focused environment for fellow artists.

The environment is simple and communal. Residents share responsibility for maintaining the space and preserving its peaceful atmosphere.

Eligibility & Support

Using only talent and need as criteria, the Foundation invites writers and visual artists from all backgrounds to apply. Residents receive individual en-suite bedrooms and separate working studios.

Residency Structure

The Center operates nearly year-round and accommodates four creative people at a time. Residencies are offered for full calendar months, and applications are accepted twice annually. The August/September application period is for residencies in January-June; the January/February application period is for residencies in July-November. The Barn is closed every December.

The environment is simple and communal. Residents are expected to contribute to maintaining both the physical condition of The Barn and its peaceful atmosphere.

Domestic Fellows are provided with stipends, international Fellows are provided with capped reimbursements for expenses.

Click on the "Register" link and complete and submit the registration form.

4. Save

During the Call for Applications period, your application can be saved as DRAFT until all required information is completed and attachments uploaded. As each section is completed, you will see a Check icon appear in the category tab when the application is saved. At any time, you can download and print your application by clicking on the icon in the Application Summary section.

5. Submit

Please note that any incomplete fields will be flagged for you before you submit.

On completion, save your application as FINAL. Download and print a copy for your records by clicking on the icon in the Application Summary section in the right column. Note: Once Submitted as Final, you are unable to edit your application. If there is something you need revised, you may reach out via email at apply@albeefoundation.org.

What does the residency provide?

The William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (aka The Barn) is a converted horse stable located at the easternmost end of Long Island, in the town of Montauk. The space, which was lovingly renovated in the early 2020s, consists of two floors with generous communal space (a massive library and a spacious kitchen) as well as four en-suite bedrooms and four private working studios set up to accommodate two writers and two visual artists at any given time.

Is there any cost to apply or to stay at The Barn?

No; there is no fee of any kind. From application through residency, there is no cost imposed on you.

Do you provide stipends or grants?

Yes.

Domestic Fellows will receive a $2500 stipend, which will be distributed upon successful completion of the residency.

International Fellows are eligible to receive reimbursement of their expenses, capped at $2500, which will also be distributed upon successful completion of the residency, and submission of proof of costs incurred.

How long is each residency?

Each residency period is set for individual calendar months. No partial month residencies are offered. Residencies cannot be requested for four consecutive weeks that run between two months. No exceptions will be made.

Is there an application fee?

There are no fees at all.

What is the application deadline?

There are two application periods every year.

The January/February period governs residencies July through November of the same year.

The August/September period governs residencies January through June of the following year.

Who can apply?

Any creative person, over the age of 18, is welcome to apply, regardless of their nationality or whether they are currently students.

Can I submit as both a writer and a visual artist?

Yes, but you will need to submit separate applications for each discipline. You may also submit multiple times for each discipline (i.e. as a novelist and a poet), but each must be its own application.

Is there a cap on number of times someone can apply?

No. If you do not get into The Barn your first time around you are welcome to apply for whichever subsequent cycles you wish.

Can Fellows apply to return to The Barn?

Yes, but you must wait a full calendar year after your residency ends in order to apply again.
